Kenny Wayne - Hard Shot To Swallow

I got an email recently from an artist's manager. It was the first time that I've been contacted about the possibility of releasing some country music on Nice People. And, hey... this is Oklahoma. I grew up with some old school country music. As long as this isn't some new jack, glossy, autotuned pop country, I told the manager that I'd be willing to give it a listen and speak with the artist. He assured me that this was the real deal and that Kenny Wayne would be happy to speak with me.

I got the mp3 files on Saturday, along with a message that included Kenny's phone number. So, I picked up my phone this morning and gave Kenny a call.

Kenny picked up the phone. After making my introduction, I was promptly informed that it's "a God damn disgrace to make a business call on Memorial Day." and that I should be ashamed of handling my business "like some kind of liberal pussy with no respect for the boys who lost their lives defending this great nation".

That was my first introduction to Kenny Wayne. To be perfectly honest, he's not the kind of "Nice People" we typically deal with. But, his manager is. On top of that, his songs are really good. And, his manager seems sure that he's inches from confirming a gig at Silver Dollar City, where Kenny would be happy to wear a Nice People shirt onstage. That would be kinda cool.

Stay tuned over the next week for a couple more songs from this up and comer who some consider an unrecognized leader of the current renegade country resurgence.

Evangelicals - Bloodstream (Slow Blood Version)

This started as a Basement Series session. But, Josh took his song home to tinker with it. In the process, he unearthed an old, beloved guitar pedal and was inspired to completely re-do the song. We held back some cool stuff from the Basement Session. So, hopefully, you'll hear some of that soon. But, for now, you get the Slow Blood Version of the Evangelicals song, Bloodstream. It's just as spooky and beautiful as the version from the basement. But, it's so much more. We hope you love it as much as we do.

Gentle Ghost - Please Don't Go Out Tonight (Basement Session)

Gentle Ghost is the first band to put out a record on Nice People. They were also the first band to offer a free mp3 on Nice People. And, now, they've got the first release as part of the Nice People Basement Series. We'll be inviting some of our favorite performers to play us some songs in the basement of Nice People World Headquarters. And, we hope to share a lot of them with you.

This is Sethy performing Please Don't Go Out Tonight, a track that appears in full-band form on their debut LP, Family. If you love them, be sure to see them open the festivities on the Main Stage on Sunday at Noon.

Brother Gruesome - Cut It Out

Brother Gruesome is intense. Their recent cassette release is spectacular! They had a powerful intensity on stage, even when it was just two people. Their NMF sets (with a couple more band members) should be incredible. They're playing at Opolis on Sunday at 12:30pm. They're also playing late into the night on Saturday night at the Dojo after party. Check them out!

Gang Starr Museum - Dance In The Ocean

Gang Starr Museum is Mickey Reece's new pop punk band. Eric Nauni plays drums and sings the pretty parts. This is their first release. It's called Dance In The Ocean. And, we love it!

Go see Gang Starr Museum on Saturday in the alley behind Guestroom Records. Their set is scheduled for 4:10pm.

Kite Flying Robot - Solid Gold

I truly love every song that we're releasing this week. But, of all of them, this is the one that's constantly ringing in my head. Those who know me know that I don't dance. I'm tall and awkward and I've just never done it and probably never will. But, Kite Flying Robot makes me daydream about dancing. And, I'm quite sure that they'll have people on their feet and shaking it on Saturday at 6pm at the Opolis Stage. Be there!

Mayola - Where Does God Come In?

If I understand correctly, this track from Mayola represents a new sonic direction, with Riley Jantzen moving into a new, more spacious recording space. As an audio engineer, I give this two enthusiastic thumbs up! It sounds wonderful. It's a band that's already known for lush arrangements of fantastic songs, finding a place where their sound can fully blossom in a great sounding room. It's a luxury every band should have and one that Mayola does not take for granted.

Check out the new sound on Where Does God Come In? Then, go see them rock the MAIN STAGE at NMF on Sunday at around 12:45.

Euclid Crash - Girl Talk

Euclid Crash rocks. Euclid Crash is a rock. It's easy for real life stuff to force bands to examine their priorities and put the music on the back burner. What's less common is for the band to come out of the other side of the tunnel in one piece, stronger even, and with a renewed energy and intensity. Euclid Crash plays survival rock. And, we're super happy to see them back in action!

The song Girl Talk is the first release from this band in a long, long time. And, it was worth the wait! Go see Euclid Crash at Norman Music Festival, performing at 1:00pm on Sunday at Opolis.

Dikes of Holland - Into the Ditches

We figure that most of the national, touring bands at NMF will be covered pretty extensively by local media this week. So, we're focusing mostly on local bands that we think you should definitely see.

Dikes of Holland are a band from Austin, TX, with ties to Norman. They've been coming through Oklahoma enough recently to earn a spot among our favorite regional bands out there working hard for the cause. Check out their track, Into the Ditches. Then, get out to see them destroy the alley behind Guestroom Records on Saturday night around 10:30.

Folks in Tulsa should also look for Dikes of Holland to play a NMF warm-up show Friday night at Soundpony with Depth & Current.

Miracord - New Religion

Miracord is a new supergroup featuring some of Norman/OKC legends, including current and former members of Beefeater Project, Ambassador Bill, Son of Sam Walton, Locust Avenue, Glister, The Rounders, The Ills, Dorian Small, Penny Hill and Sugar Free Allstars. Whoa! Wicked pedigree! They're doing old-school, psychedelic pop music the way that it should be done.

Check out their track, New Religion. We love it! And, it's a great teaser for what to expect from this band moving forward. Get out to see their debut show at Norman Music Festival this coming Saturday, April 24 at the Coach's Brewhouse Stage at 6pm.

Student Film - Armed and Trained

We're back! And, this is our first multi-song release. This digital EP from Student Film, entitled Armed and Trained, is one that we've been really excited about for a while now. This is five new songs from the band that I quite often hear referred to as "my favorite band". Student Film is one of the most influential bands in Oklahoma. Everyone that I know loves this band. And, everyone I know has wanted at some point to be in this band. I've had the pleasure of playing with them a few times. And, though we didn't play this song at any of the shows that I played with them, it was one of my favorites to play at practice.

We'll be releasing one new song per day for five days. At the end of that five days, you'll be in possession of the swanky new EP from the great Student Film. And, it's all free from Nice People! Don't forget to subscribe so you can get all of the free digital releases automatically.

Jeff Richardson (Locust Avenue) called me to book a day in the studio to record a cover of Do They Know It's Christmas? When he showed up for the session, he had Steven Drozd (Flaming Lips) with him. I can't even begin to describe how much fun I had working on that session. And, the song turned out really great! The guys didn't really have a plan for what to do with the song, outside of emailing it to friends. I felt that it would be a shame for this great cover to be kept so secret. So, I offered to make this cover the 2009 Nice People Holiday Single. They were excited about the idea. So, Nice People picked up the tab for licensing the cover and we're making it available to you for free. We really hope you'll enjoy this fantastic version of the 1984 Band Aid Christmas classic. Feel Spectres - Blow Up The Moon

Feel Spectres make pop music that doesn't insult your intelligence. Their songs are timeless and catchy without needing to be dumbed down for the masses. We love Feel Spectres because they seem to possess most of the qualities that we love about indie rock, while avoiding the things that turn us off. They have clever lyrics without being pretentious and insulting. Their sense of humor enhances the music rather than defining it. They're serious about rocking, without taking themselves too seriously. They're cool without being aloof or unapproachable. Feel Spectres, like many of our current favorite bands, are a tight posse making great music for all the right reasons. This band makes it look like a lot of fun to be in a band. Gentle Ghost - Monarch Pass single

Gentle Ghost is like a breath of fresh air. Sethy McCarroll and crew put the ART back in Art-Rock. They will gently ease their way into your subconscious before pummeling you with an earnest intensity that is larger than life. It's like reading the diary of someone you really, genuinely want to know more about. We at Nice People have very high hopes for this band. Welcome to Nice People. Nice People is a music label, based in Norman, Oklahoma. Nice People will release great music, made by nice people. We plan to eventually make physical releases (CD, Vinyl, Cassette, DVD, etc.) available. How and when physical releases are available will depend on the desires of the artists and the fans who love them. For now, and over the coming months, we'll make several mp3 singles available for free on this podcast. These singles will be from some of the first artists involved with Nice People. We're very excited about getting their music out into the world.
